Guilmar Valle (He/Him/His)

During this session we will be joined by Guilmar Valle, he is from Stamford, CT. Guilmar was BRIDGE class of 2019 and is currently a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering with a minor in Political Science. Guilmar is currently the Vice President for USG (Undergraduate Student Government.) He is a tutor for Student Support Services and a Teaching Assistant for ENGR 1000 (Orientation to Engineering.) He is creating and will be running a position to focus on Mental Health within his fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. He is also involved with Engineering Ambassadors, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Rainbow Center as a Mentor. Outside of academics and school, Guilmar loves to go on runs, try new food, and catch up on Netflix shows.

Emma Lucas (She/Her/Hers)

Emma Lucas also joins us! Emma was BRIDGE class of 2019, was a BRIDGE tutor for the 2020 class, and will be one of the head tutors for this coming 2021 summer. Emma is currently a sophomore studying Material Science and Engineering. She is a member of the Women’s Rowing team, an ENGR 1000 TA, and an academic tutor for the Engineering Diversity and Outreach Center. She enjoys going to the gym, baking, skiing, biking, crafts, and going for drives.

Xavier Hill (He/Him/His)


 Xavier Hill also be joining us!  He is from Waterbury Connecticut and is a sophomore Mechanical Engineering major with a minor in math. He did BRIDGE in 2019 and returned to be a tutor for 2020. He is apart of the Engineering ambassador’s STEM night committee and a general body member of NSBE. This semester he worked for EDOC as an academic tutor and served as an ENGR1000 TA last semester. In his spare time he likes watching movies, playing video games, and having a fun time.

Engineering Diversity and Outreach Center Overview and Programs

Kevin McLaughlin (he/his), Director, gives an overview of what the UConn Engineering Diversity and Outreach Center (EDOC) is about. There are many programs that we run both over the summer and during the academic year for UConn students, K-12 students, teachers, and the greater community. These programs range from one-day events, to several week-long opportunities.

Summer BRIDGE Program for Incoming First Year Students

Esther Chang (she/her), BRIDGE '14, gives her testament as to why this program is important. BRIDGE creates a lifelong family that guides underreprested students in engineering here at UConn. Through friendships, academic support, professional networking, financial aid, leadership opportunities, and mentorship, our students grow together.

How EDOC Can Support You, and How You Can Get Involved

Velda Alfred Abney (she/her), Program Coordinator, speaks to all the different ways you can get involved in our center! Our students mean everything to us, and we want everyone to have a chance to connect and grow! EDOC’s Part in Building Anti-racist Communities

Dr. Stephany Santos (she/her), BRIDGE '08, Associate Director, speaks to actions and initiaves EDOC is doing alongside the School of Engineering, UConn, and the rest of the world on building anti-racist communitities. Together, we can and will make the world a better, safer place for everyone, where each individual can thrive.
